Tooth Extraction While no one wants to have a tooth extraction, sometimes they are a necessary part of maintaining a high level of oral cavity health. Many patients are nervous about having a tooth pulled. They should realize that with modern-day sedation dentistry, they will not feel anything other than gentle pressure and will remain in a comfortable position throughout the procedure. Exodontia is the dental term for tooth extraction. No matter what the cause of the tooth damage, extractions are relied upon to safely remove the tooth to keep the disease and decay from spreading to other healthy tissues in the oral cavity.Extractions are performed on a daily basis all across the country. Despite this, tooth extraction is considered the last resort. Removing the tooth can create a series of issues which would need to be addressed in turn once the tooth is removed. When a tooth is missing the force, which occurs each time a patient chews is also lost; this can in turn weaken the jawbone and cause it to deteriorate and weaken. This can cause other teeth to become loose and decayed. Those patients with concerns over tooth extractions or who have noticed discoloration on a particular toothshould come in for an evaluation to determine if the tooth needs to be extracted. We can perform a quick and easy evaluation in less than 15 minutes to make that determination in our office. Please come see us today at Cooley Smiles. Types of ExtractionWhile there are two different kinds of extractions, they both use the same principle of gentle pressure to work the tooth free of the supportive bone and gum tissues. The simple extraction is the most commonly performed. It uses a numbing solution applied to both the gums and the tooth to make sure the patient is desensitized during the procedure. Once sufficiently numbed, the tooth is removed. The surgical extraction is a more involved process and utilized when the patient's teeth have erupted incorrectly and remain partially embedded in the jawbone. When teeth fail to erupt correctly, it can put the other teeth in the oral cavity under enormous stress and cause them to shift out of alignment. When a tooth is too difficult to extract, it can be broken into several smaller pieces to simplify the extraction process. This most frequently occurs in wisdom teeth. Patients can rest easy during the extraction process. With advancements in sedation dentistry techniques, patients can remain comfortable and relaxed during their procedure without experiencing any pain or discomfort. In most cases, whether surgically extracted or not, the surgery site is healed within just a few days. Extraction procedures and protocols have greatly improved over the years. Thankfully, extractions today are done in a controlled, sterile environment. Extractions can be performed quickly and easily typically taking less than 30 minutes to complete.
