Aesthetic Gum Lift

A smiling of a woman after her gum lift surgery at Cooley Smiles Most people look for a cosmetic dentist because they want to fix damaged or discolored teeth. If you have healthy teeth, you may think cosmetic dentistry is not the right choice for you. What if you have great teeth but your gumline covers them, making it difficult to show them off? You may want to consider a gum lift. Our cosmetic dentistry office, Cooley Smiles, can help you with that.

What Is a Gum Lift?

A gum lift is a cosmetic dental procedure that improves your smile by raising your gumline to reveal more of your teeth. This short surgery removes excess gum tissue that covers your teeth and causes them to appear smaller than they actually are. The procedure is sometimes referred to as a gingivectomy or crown lengthening.

How Does a Gum Lift Work?

A typical appointment for a gum lift includes x-rays to determine how much gum tissue should be removed, followed by a brief surgery that uses a dental laser to contour the gums. The laser cauterizes the gum tissue at the same time it cuts it in order to reduce bleeding and trauma. A local anesthetic is administered prior to the surgery.

After your gum lift, you may have some pain and swelling that lasts a few days. It can usually be controlled with over-the-counter pain medications.

We recommend you eat softer foods until the swelling has reduced and avoid any foods that could get stuck in your teeth. You should also avoid spicy foods as they may irritate your gums. When brushing and flossing your teeth after your gum lift, be careful not to use too much pressure. It may take a week or two for your gums to heal completely.

Benefits of a Gum Lift

A gum lift is a relatively painless procedure that offers a short recovery time and immediate and lasting results. It can provide you with a better ratio of teeth to gum tissue, and it can make your teeth look longer and more symmetrical. In addition to improving your smile, it can help improve oral health.

Due to the procedure using a dental laser, it is easy to determine the exact area of gum tissue that needs to be removed. The laser is very precise and ensures that no additional tissue is damaged or removed.

Who Should Consider a Gum Lift?

You might consider a gum lift if your gumline covers more of your teeth than you would like or if your gumline is uneven. You might not be a good candidate if you are not in very good oral health. Any conditions such as gum disease will need to be treated before you investigate an aesthetic gum lift. Gum lifts are sometimes recommended for medical reasons, such as having an infection in your gum tissue.
